Using a small sample of hair cut from the scalp, scientists use special equipment to evaluate special markers on the hair shaft called metabolites that are mainly produced when alcohol is in the bloodstream, although small amounts are also absorbed from alimentary and environmental sources.

Why is Hair Better than Blood?

A blood alcohol test is usually for a person who is intoxicated at the scene, like a drunken driver taking a breath test. Alcohol in blood decays at the rate of about one unit per hour and so it is quickly lost. Blood feeds the hair root, leaving tiny traces of alcohol metabolite that become trapped in the hair and gives an alcohol history which we detect when performing a hair alcohol test. A hair alcohol test can show alcohol abuse over a period of months instead of hours.
